Brent Brown Toyota and UVU Athletics launched this unique student competition at the last home Men's Basketball game on February 25. The goal was simple: design a UVU-themed car wrap for a 2012 Scion iQ. The winning design would be applied to the car, and made available to UVU's free use for a year after the competition. It would also be housed at Brent Brown Toyota and driven throughout valley.

With the help of students, faculty and Mighty Athletic Wolverine League, word of the competition spread. Dozens of students took their hand at designing the compact car. On April 1, four finalists (five designs total) were chosen and put up for a public vote on Brent Brown Toyota's Facebook page for one week. The winner will be announced at the ceremony on April 14.

Brent Brown Toyota Scion will apply the design with the most votes to a 2012 Scion iQ for UVU Athletics' use. They will also award the winning designer a $1,000 textbook scholarship. The University-themed Scion iQ will be unveiled on May 1 when UVU Men's Baseball faces BYU at the Brent Brown Ballpark.

Gas Prices’ Effect on Utah Car Sales

Pain at the pump means decisions at the dealership.

As gas prices continue to rise, many car buyers are shying away from the full-size trucks and SUVs, in favor of hybrids or fuel-efficient cars. Brent Brown Toyota Scion's Larry Terry broke down the numbers and explained the trend to KSL Radio's Scott and Maria of Utah's Afternoon News.

Listen to the whole interview here.

Among the Brent Brown Toyota sales figures that illustrate the trend:

  • Sales of the Prius (53 city MPG), the world's top-selling fuel-efficient car, are up 23 percent.
  • Sales of the Camry Hybrid (43 city MPG) are up 230 percent.
  • Sales of the Tacoma (21 city MPG), Toyota's smaller truck model, are up 18 percent.

This reflects national trends. HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates reported this month that February sales of hybrids nation-wide increased 2.5x more than the passenger-vehicle market as a whole.

That's no surprise given the average American household spent a record $4,155 at the pump in 2011 -- about 8.4 percent of the median family income -- according to the Associated Press, and prices continue climbing this year, with no end in sight.

Toyota is the top producer and seller of hybrids, nationwide. Since its U.S. introduction in 2000, Prius -- when compared to the average car -- has saved American consumers an estimated $2.93 billion in fuel costs*, 1.1 billion gallons of gas* and 16.1 million tons of CO2 emissions*.

In addition to their wide selection of fuel-efficient cars, Brent Brown Toyota Scion also carries an extensive inventory of pre-owned vehicles, so customers can find the car that is just right for them. They offer the very best fully-inspected vehicles in the state, many of which are factory- certified models backed with a comprehensive warranty. Learn more at http://www.BrentBrownToyota.com.

2012 Toyota GT 86

It's no secret that the Toyota FT-86 will finally make its production-spec debut next week in Tokyo, and ahead of that, the automaker's UK office has released the first official photos and some initial specs. In Europe, the car will officially be called the Toyota GT 86.

Cutting right to the chase, here are the specs that are now official, from the Toyota UK announcement. Obviously, there's more to come:
  • 2.0-liter boxer with D4-S injection (direct and port injected)
  • 197 hp @ 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) @6,600 rpm
  • 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions
  • 17-inch wheel/tire package standard
  • 4,240mm (167 in.) long, 1285mm (50.6 in.) high, 2,570mm (101 in.) wide

As demonstrated in the photos, everything is basically in line with what we've seen so far in the various leaked materials. So, start getting excited. In addition to the sharp styling outside, the interior looks the business, and the "86" fender logo is just plain cool. The GT 86 goes on sale in the UK next June.
